Veteran soca artiste Peter Ram is set to record a collaboration with songstress Jadine. Jadine, who hails from Montserrat, started her career as a songstress in 2003, and has quickly become one of the fastest rising stars in soca earning her two separate nominations as Best New Female Soca Artist in 2005 and again in 2008 for Best Groovy Soca Collaboration with Vincy soca artist Problem Child by the Soca Awards Committee. In 2009, she was the New England Urban Music Award winner of Best Caribbean Female Artist.

Jadine credits her family for first realizing her potential. When she was fourteen they forced her to sing at her aunt’s wedding. Delightfully laughing at the memory Jadine says, “I cried the whole time, but by the time I was eighteen, I was the queen of karaoke, you could not get a microphone out of my hands.”

Not surprising, over the past few years the demand for a performance by Jadine has spread throughout the entertainment industry. Her debut single and video, “Don’t Call My Phone” was amongst the soca’s crème de la crème on VP Records prestigious compilation, Soca Gold 2008. It went on to debut on Tempo Networks in the number 2 spot on the Cross Caribbean Countdown. She went on to performing alongside female calypsonian the legendary Singing Sandra , KMC, Iwer George, Peter Ram, Collie Buddz, Machel Montano, Cecile, Sanchez, Leon and The Peoples to name a few at varying events throughout the region. She proudly represented Montserrat at the 2005 New York Caribbean Tourism Organization Week Celebration during which they hosted the launch of MTV New Caribbean Channel “TEMPO”.

Teaming up with Vicrae Management Inc, Jadine is currently working on her sophomore album that will fuel a season of change. Featured producers include, Godfrey “Cherry” Ince for Black Heat Entertainment, Kamau “Mr. Network” Georges and Garvin “Scrappy” Johnson for Danger1 Productions. Passionate, driven and soulful, Jadine is poised to be a cultural force wearing her West Indian heritage proudly on her chest. Demonstrating her ability to appeal to all audiences, she gets the clubs jumping with her bass heavy R&B-Soca styled joints like “Stay In Touch” and “Do It Better” and appeals to the European dance market with her “tribal remixes”.

With her recently released single “Do It Better” she does indeed try to. She amazes and dazzles people with her rich voice and eclectic style creating an interesting dynamic that will tickle Soca audiences throughout the world. Be on the look out for the release of her upcoming album “Unleash De Deva“ and her collaboration with Pyramid’s Peter Ram.

According to the Warlord in his usual strong intonations, “Kartel a di wickedest genius, lyrically, but him still can’t throw Mavado. Kartel buss (10) years now and Mavado bigger than yuh and richer than yuh and him have at least three points ahead of Kartel. Some of these niggaz are stupid and just want to run di clubs and the streets.”

The cross angry deejay had high praises for fellow group members Serani and Mavado and said Kartel aka the ‘Gaa-zer’ and his Portmore Empire will never be able to attain the accolades of Alliance before later labeling them the Ungrateful Alliance.

“Look pon MTV Jams, yu si nobody from Gaaa-zer? Nuh Mavado yuh si? Mavado deh pon Hot 97 in a New York an’ a tour the whole a di US. Yuh never did know seh a suh Mavado bad till him start clash with Kartel, don’t? When Kartel leave Alliance him a do him thing and Mavado come replace him as a general. Who in a Portmore Empire can step up and be a leader? Jah Vinci? Blak Ryno? Dem a follower.” - He added.

Put him in an Olympic stadium or a shopping street in the centre of Manchester and the result is the same: total annihilation.

Usain Bolt Clocks Fastest Ever 150m

Put him in an Olympic stadium or a shopping street in the centre of Manchester and the result is the same: total annihilation.

The frightening thing is that the big Jamaican, who pushed back the boundaries of possibility last summer when he won three gold medals in world record time in Beijing, insists he is still only 70 per cent fit following an interrupted winter and the loss of nine days’ training after his car crash last month.

His winning time in Sunday’s rarely run 150 metres was an eye-popping 14.35sec, smashing the previous best-known time for the distance of Canada’s Donovan Bailey - 14.99sec run on bend against Michael Johnson in 1997.

Britain’s Marlon Devonish was a distant second in 15.07sec. He admitted Bolt was in “a league of his own”.

Bolt’s time will now be ratified by the International Association of Athletics Federations as an official ‘world best’, though it is his 100m split-time that will send shockwaves across the world - 9.90sec on a rain-soaked track in temperatures more common to February than mid-May.

To put that into perspective, Dwain Chambers managed 10.21sec in his first 100m of the season on Saturday in the tropical heat of Puerto Rico. The Briton’s talk of ‘Project Bolt’ looks precisely that: just talk.

Bolt must now be taken at his word when he says he is capable of improving on his 100m world record of 9.69sec this summer. “Anything is possible” is his mantra, and on this evidence it is hard to think of a better phrase to describe what lies ahead this summer.

“You can expect great things from me,” said Bolt. “I always go out and try to do my best.”

His performance, which ended with his trademark ‘lighting bolt’ celebration, was a reward for the several thousands hardy souls who shivered under umbrellas for most of the afternoon beside the temporary track erected on Manchester’s Deansgate.

But by the time Bolt took to the stage for the final the rain clouds had cleared and even the sun was starting to burst through. His Midas touch clearly extends to the elements.

NEW YORK, NY (RHONA FOX, INC.) - International soca star Destra Garcia successfully launched her latest studio effort, HOTT, in Manhattan last Saturday, April 25, 2009. A sold-out crowd packed SOB’s, as New York City’s premier nightlife promotions team - Upscale Crowd Entertainment and Caribbean Fuse - presented the launch of her sixth album to longtime and new fans.

The versatile vocalist, songwriter and performer did not disappoint the packed Manhattan venue. Without her Atlantik band and joined by only two of her dancers, Destra drove the crowd into a bacchanal frenzy. With rags, flags and shirts waving in the air, she thrilled them with her soca staples like “Carnival” and “Bonnie & Clyde,” and new hits from the album, including the title track “Hott,” and “Bacchanal.”

HOTT is a brilliant introduction to who Destra is, for those who are unfamiliar with her, and is a must-have addition to the ‘Destra’ collection for fans and soca-lovers everywhere. “I think this album shows growth as a performing artist - a combination of my musical styles and versatility - past, present and future,” discloses soca’s ultimate female ambassador. Boasting 10 sizzling tracks, HOTT is poised to take soca fans by storm as Destra brings this indigenous sound of the southern Caribbean to music aficionados around the world.

She will first hit the masses at the Best of the Best concert in Miami in May, where she’ll share the stage with Rick Ross and T-Pain, and represent as the only soca act on the dancehall/hip-hop bill. Her tour dates for the summer include stops to celebrate Caribana in Toronto, Crop Over in Barbados, and Notting Hill Carnival in London, just to name a few of the world’s biggest music festivals.

While in New York, Destra met with members of the media, including TRACE TV, was featured on Irie Jam Radio and on New York’s urban mainstream giant HOT97, with Jabba, D Life and Bobby Konders. She also headlined at PACE University last Friday, then shocked the crowd at Caribbean Fridays at Club Element with an impromptu performance.

Celebrating 10 years in the business, Destra revealed she is ready to move forward, accepting new challenges with the aid of musical skills already acquired. And if this album celebration proved anything, it is that Destra’s fans are ready to join her journey, wherever she goes. The club was filled to capacity hours before she hit the stage at 3am, and promoters say they had to turn away almost 500 people. “This is the best experience I’ve had in New York, in all the years I’ve been coming here,” stated an exorbitant Destra, following her rousing showcase. “From the sold-out crowd in the club to the radio interviews and meeting with the media and fans, it definitely was my best trip here.”

For those who missed the soca queen in action, she will be back in New York in late May.

Mavado Demolishes the UK

Dancehall megastar Mavado kicked off his UK/European Tour in fine style last night at Club Isis in Nottingham, causing pandemonium with the many females in attendance, who spent most of his performance trying to drag him off stage.

The packed club was the first of 4 shows on the “Brighter Days” UK tour, with Bristol, Bradford and London finishing off the UK leg on Sunday night. Alliance stablemate Serani and Bugle are also on the UK tour. The Anger Management Band is the backing band for the London show, with Alliance selector Boom Boom also in the travel party.

Monday sees Mavado jetting off to Paris for his first-ever live shows in Europe, which will see the Gully god blaze a trail through France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. “It’s my third time in the UK and every time it gets bigger and better,” says Mavado. “I will be performing in many new cities and countries on this tour which is exciting and I am looking forward to going to Europe to spread my music and represent Jamaica.”

As soon as Mavado finishes up in Europe he will fly straight into Miami for the Best of the Best Memorial Day Weekend extravaganza, that promises to be bigger and better than ever, rounding out a gruelling month in LA for the UCLA Jazz Festival on Monday May 25th.

Being able to perform in UK cities that had previously stopped Mavado performing there and with successful shows in St Maarten and Antigua recently, his travelling woes seem far behind now, as Mavado moves on to a busy Summer that will see him in action in Atlanta, Greensboro, the St Kitts Music Festival, HOT 97’s Summer Jam, the Brooklyn Music festival and his first ever tour to Japan amongst other places.

With some big name collaborations in the making, the Gully God’s international popularity continues to expand.

The 2009 line-up for its third undertaking on Sunday, May 24th at Bicentennial Park in Miami sees nothing but stars! Billed as the “Best Caribbean Show in North America,” Best of the Best has grown into an international music festival, which music lovers journey from around the world to savor each year. Presented by Miami’s premier promotions company, JBJ Entertainment, this year’s roster showcases artists that are at the top of their game, in their respective genres, in Caribbean and urban music.

Dancehall star Mavado is enjoying amazing crossover success with his current album sitting pretty at #76 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-hop albums; it’s the only Caribbean album on a Billboard mainstream chart. “Last year I didn’t get to make it to the show,” says Mavado. “So this year, Best of the Best is going to get the very best of Mavado.”

Also enjoying tremendous mainstream airplay is Serani, whose single “No Games” comes in at #67 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-hop chart this week. “With all the positive things happening in my career recently, Best of the Best is dropping at the right time,” reveals Serani. “I’m 100% ready to celebrate with all my fans cause it’s going to be one big party!”

Elephant Man joins the momentum as his dance anthem “Nuh Linga” debuts this week on Billboard’s Hot 100 R&B/Hip-hop chart at #100. Fans can also expect to enjoy massive catalogs of hits from Wayne Wonder (”No Letting Go,” # 11 Billboard Hot 100; 2003), Bounty Killer (”Hey Baby” with No Doubt; 2001 & “Hip Hopera” with The Fugees; 1997), Beenie Man (”Hmm Hmm,” #42 Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop Singles Sales; 2006), Capleton (Heathen Rage, #42 Billboard Hot Rap Singles; 1996), Cocoa Tea (”Barack Obama,” #9 Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop Singles Sales; 2009), and Tony Matterhorn (”Dutty Wine,” #24 Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop Singles Sales; 2007).

The show will also profile soca star Destra, who drops her new album internationally this week. Reggae artist Ras Penco comes with the #3 reggae song in Jamaica, while Ce’Cile sits at the top of the reggae album chart (Jamaica Weekly Countdown). The Caribbean roster rounds up with Spice (who is enjoying massive airplay with her collaboration with Vybz Kartel, “Romping Shop”), Flippa Mafia, Christopher Martin and The Stones.

Hip-hop lovers will be satisfied with heavyweights like Rick Ross (who just dropped his new album this week, Deeper Than Rap), Jeezy, remix king T-Pain and Miami’s own DJ Khaled. “It’s going to be a night to remember,” states Mavado, of the star-studded bill. “The show’s name tells you who is performing, so the fans can come out and expect to see the best.”

Air Jamaica has just been added as an airline sponsor for the show, which takes place at Bicentennial Park, located at 1075 Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami. Park gates open at 1:00 pm and show time is set for 1:30pm sharp. The 10-hour event does not end there. Everyone is invited to the official Best of the Best After Party, at Bongos Nightclub (located behind the American Airlines Arena), immediately following the show.

Miss Dotty made her transition earlier this month, leaving behind her adoring children, grandchildren, family and friends.

A very somber Buju said he would like to thank all those who have sent their condolences in this his time of grief.

In other news Gargamel Music, Inc. celebrates its 5th year operating in the United States by going green! Originally launched in Kingston by CEO Buju Banton back in the late 90s, the label is proud to do our part for the environment by kicking off a fresh line of recycled products starting with the new Buju Banton album, Rasta Got Soul, which drops in North America next week Tuesday, April 21st. The date also marks the 43rd anniversary of the late Emperor Haile Selassie’s historic visit to Jamaica in 1966.

Art Director, Darhil Crooks of Foundation Design Studio, explains his creative vision for the new album. “Now that we’re in a digital age, everything about the CD as we know it has become disposable. Album art has been reduced to a small icon on whatever mp3 player you use,” he explains.

Darhil remembers exploring his parents vinyl collection as a kid and getting absorbed in the artwork. “That tactile feeling has been lost,” he admits, “but I felt it was important that we brought that back with Rasta Got Soul. People throw away jewel cases now and I really wanted to bring back the feeling of vinyl when the music and the imagery were inseparable.”

Working with a striking set of black and white images shot by esteemed celebrity photographer, Jonathan Mannion, the design itself is rather minimal. “My goal was to showcase Mannion’s work and give the album a classic, clean look. Not too busy. Raw and real,” Darhil adds. “I just took it back to basics in the same way Rasta Got Soul is taking it back to the roots.”
