Little Bay, Montserrat – Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John and Mark Knopfler are amongst the music industry greats contributing to a new ‘Wall of Fame’ which was unveiled in the Montserrat Cultural Centre last week.

The musicians had their hands cast in bronze to represent the ‘helping hand’ they provided when performing in the Music for Montserrat concert at the Royal Albert Hall on September 15, 1997. The concert was organised by legendary producer Sir George Martin, whose connections with Montserrat date back over 30 years. Sir George’s hand-prints also appear on the wall, with percussionist Ray Cooper’s hands completing the current line up.

“Displaying these bronzed hand plaques demonstrates our continued commitment to the development of the arts in Montserrat,” said Sir George Martin, former producer of the Beatles, patron of the Cultural Centre and long time winter resident of Montserrat. “This is a lasting tribute to the artists who performed at the Royal Albert Hall, without whose selfless contribution the Centre would not have been built.”

Helping Sir George at the unveiling of the Wall of Fame was Sir Trevor MacDonald, one of Britain’s foremost news anchormen and television presenters, who was in Montserrat at the time to film a documentary for ITV.

The Montserrat Cultural Centre is the island’s premier arts and culture facility, which first opened for business in 2007. It is hoped that the ‘Wall of Fame’ will soon be extended to include the handprints of other artistes who performed at the Music for Montserrat concert. These include Jimmy Buffet, Montserrat’s own Alphonsus ‘Arrow’ Cassell, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Dave Hartley, the London Gospel Community Choir, Sting and Ian Thomas.

One of the selectors who was injured was Alliance selector ‘Foota Hype’ who early reports say was beaten to the point where one of his hands was broken in two places.  Another selector, Fluggo from Travellers, was also beaten brutally by a group of over 20 men to the point where he had to be admitted to the hospital.

“De man dem say Mavado was supposed to go to the dance and him never go, dem claim say a Foota cause it, but Fluggo from Travellers get it wicked, the argument is that him violate wid the flyers inna some way and dem beat him too, all chop wid lass him get,” one source told reggaemusicfm.

Three years ago, selector ‘Hottaball’ was beaten by men from the Nineties as well who felt that he had dissed the Alliance, and was aligned to Beenie Man.

When contacted, selector Foota Hype would neither confirm or deny that the incident had happened only to say that he “was stressed out about the whole thing but call me tomorrow”.

Chris Brown Arrested After Alleged Rihanna Assault

Chris Brown Arrested After Alleged Rihanna Assault

Grammy day was supposed to be a glittery affair for R&B’s reigning It couple, Chris Brown and Rihanna. But things went horribly amiss.

About the time Brown was scheduled to be singing “Forever” onstage at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, he was instead detained by police, being questioned for allegedly roughing up Rihanna.

Brown, 19, turned himself in at the LAPD’s Wilshire station around 6:30 p.m. and was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of four years. The case will now be sent to the district attorney’s office and further charges could be filed. He was released from jail after posting $50,000 bail.

“He was very professional and didn’t appear to have injuries,” said Sgt. Bridget Pickett, adding, “he’s a good looking young man.”

While Brown appeared unscathed, sources tell E! News that the alleged victim was Rihanna, 20, and that she suffered visible bruises on her face during an early morning confrontation. Both in turn balked at scheduled Grammy appearances.

A spokeswoman for Brown’s label declined comment and calls to his attorney, Mark Geragos, weren’t immediately returned.

Meanwhile, Rihanna’s publicist, Amanda Silverman, said the “Disturbia” singer ”is well. Thank you for concern and support.”

Per department policy, police declined to identify the alleged victim in the incident, which occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the Hancock Park area, apparently as the two were heading home from Clive Davis‘ annual pre-Grammy bash, where they had been all smiles.

In a statement, police say Brown and his companion ”became involved in an argument. After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated. The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker.”

By the time officers arrived on the scene, Brown had split.

Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, decided against singing a medley of “Disturbia” and “Live Your Life” at tonight’s awards. Likewise, Brown scrapped his scheduled performance of “Forever.”

“We’re sorry she is unable to join us this evening,” said the Recording Academy. A virtually identical statement was issued for Brown’s absence.

Brown and Rihanna were up for dueling Pop Collaboration With Vocals awards, Brown for his duet with Jordin Sparks on “No Air,” Rihanna with Maroon 5 for “If I Never See Your Face Again.” Brown was also contending for Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Take You Down.” Neither Brown nor Rihanna won anything.

After the ceremony, Recording Academy President Neal Portnoy told E! News that he first learned of the situation “pretty late in the afternoon,” about three hours before showtime.

“Musicians are no different than anybody else. I’m not judging. I’m sorriest that they weren’t there for their moments on stage,” he said, adding that he’s never had to deal with replacing two segments at the last minute.

“I’m hoping that [the awards are] the story and should not be ecliped by this part of business,” Portnoy said. “I think the story is…the music that went on stage.”

Backstage, Anthony Hamilton, winner of the Traditional R&B Vocal Grammy with Al Green, said his pal was pressed into emergency service “about an hour and a half before the preshow.”

Green crooned “Let’s Stay Together” with assists from Justin Timberlake and Keith Urban.

Asked if old-pro Green really was able to  take the stage on such short notice, Hamilton suggested the R&B icon was practicing last night.

Said Hamilton, “He knew something could happen.”

All Daggering Songs Banned in JA

February 9th, 2009

All Daggering Songs Banned in Jamaica

The Broadcasting Commission (Jamaica) has banned all radio, television and cable services from airing songs or videos which it deems explicitly sexual and violent.

According to the Commission, these songs are in violation of sections of the Television and Sound Broadcasting Regulations.

It also says there should be no transmission through radio, television or cable services, of any audio recording, song or music video, which employs editing techniques of ‘bleeping’ or ‘beeping’ of its original lyrical content.

The Commission says it has examined a number of songs, popularly referred to as ‘daggering songs’.

It says ‘daggering’ is a colloquial term or phrase used in the dancehall culture as a reference to hard core sex, or the activities of persons engaged in the public simulation of various sexual acts and positions.

The country’s electronic media watch dog group says programme managers, station owners and operators must immediately stop airing any recording of these ‘daggering’ songs.

The Commission has been lobbying the Government for changes to be made to the law governing broadcasting and a report is to be tabled in Parliament soon.

Breathless (Sunday Devotion)

February 8th, 2009

When was the last time something took your breath away because of its majesty?

I’m not talking about an electronic gadget or some special effects in a movie. I’m talking about a nighttime sky show such as an eclipse of the moon. Or walking outside on a starry night to see Orion or Pleiades—constellations mentioned thousands of years ago in Scripture (Amos 5:8) that are still glowing today for our enjoyment. I’m speaking of a bursting dawn that radiates with glorious colors to signal another sunrise. Or the sound and light show that accompanies God’s way of watering the earth with food-producing rain (Job 36:27-33).

Have you stood by a fence and marveled at the power of a horse as it gallops gallantly through the field, mane flowing and hoofs pounding? (39:19-25). Or watched a soaring, swooping eagle drop from the sky because his God-designed vision has sighted supper from his mountain-peak nest? (39:27-30).

At creation, God gave man breath. Then he took man’s breath away with the beauty, grandeur, and eloquence of a universe of marvels created by His own hand. Look around. Examine what God has done. Then, breathless, proclaim His majesty.  — Dave Branon

The wonder of creation speaks
To everyone in different ways;
But those who know and love the Lord
Can for His handiwork give praise. —Sper

All creation is an outstretched finger pointing toward God.

Breathless
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be above all the earth. —Psalm 57:5

Mavado for Notorious Calloboration

February 5th, 2009

Jamal ‘Gravy’ Woolard, who stars in the new “NOTORIOUS”  biopic about the life of slain rapper Christopher ‘Biggie Smalls’ Wallace aka Notorious B.I.G flew into Kingston on Monday with Mavado, who returned from a hectic promotional trip to New York.

876radio.com understands that the two will be collaborating on several projects whilst Gravy is in the island.

According to Mavado’s management the singjay created history again over the weekend at a show in Rochester upstate New York being the only act on the bill, Mavado pulled out an astonishing 4,000 fans into the huge Armory venue in freezing sub-zero temperatures and snowstorms.

Observers said it was the biggest dancehall show ever to hit Rochester claiming it attracted significantly more patrons than many rap concerts including recent gigs by American rappers T.I. and Fat Joe.

Mavado also made an unprecedented three (3) live appearances on Thursday - Saturday on Hip Hop legend Funkmaster Flex’s HOT 97 radio show in New York.

On Sunday night Flex rounded off the weekend with a hype event in Manhattan’s Club Prime, hosted by the Gangster that saw a capacity crowd.

With the upcoming release of his sophomore album ‘Mr Brooks - A Better Tomorrow’ on March 3rd, and ‘So Special’ attracting international radio spins Mavado is poised to hit mainstream America soon.

We have embedded the trailer of the ‘NOTORIOUS’ movie for your viewing pleasure.

Vybz Kartel To Do New Ramping Shop

February 4th, 2009

Vybz Kartel and producer Ainsley ‘Not Nice’ Morris are in the studio hammering out a new dancehall riddim for his popular hit ‘Ramping Shop’ after the deejay failed to get clearance to use a sample of the original Ms. Independent rhythm made popular by Ne-Yo.

“We will have the remix ready by today,” Kartel told ReggaeMusic FM.

An email sent to the deejay yesterday declared:

“‘Ramping Shop’ by Vybz Kartel and Spice infringes the copyright in ‘Miss Independent’ (Smith/Hermansen/Eriksen). Clearance of this use of ‘Miss Independent’ has not been sought or obtained and I am informed that clearance will not be forthcoming. Accordingly ‘Ramping Shop’ cannot be released or exploited in any way. Please confirm your acknowledgement and acceptance of this, and that you will arrange that (i) all recordings of the infringing track will be re-called and destroyed and that no further copies will be issued, and (ii) that the audio and/or video will be taken down immediately from all Internet sites.”
