Bounty Calls Kartel A Genius

May 25th, 2009

Bounty Calls Kartel A Genius

Following on the heels of a recent interview with the Jamaica Star where the Warlord Bounty Killer and U.S. based deejay Flippa Mafia traded insults about an unfinished house and moneys owed.  The very outspoken Alliance leader has once again stepped to the fore to speak his mind about several topical issues including two of his most accomplished proteges Vybz Kartel and Mavado.

According to the Warlord in his usual strong intonations, “Kartel a di wickedest genius, lyrically, but him still can’t throw Mavado. Kartel buss (10) years now and Mavado bigger than yuh and richer than yuh and him have at least three points ahead of Kartel. Some of these niggaz are stupid and just want to run di clubs and the streets.”

The cross angry deejay had high praises for fellow group members Serani and Mavado and said Kartel aka the ‘Gaa-zer’ and his Portmore Empire will never be able to attain the accolades of Alliance before later labeling them the Ungrateful Alliance.

“Look pon MTV Jams, yu si nobody from Gaaa-zer? Nuh Mavado yuh si? Mavado deh pon Hot 97 in a New York an’ a tour the whole a di US. Yuh never did know seh a suh Mavado bad till him start clash with Kartel, don’t? When Kartel leave Alliance him a do him thing and Mavado come replace him as a general. Who in a Portmore Empire can step up and be a leader? Jah Vinci? Blak Ryno? Dem a follower.” - He added.

Mavado Demolishes the UK

May 9th, 2009

Mavado Demolishes the UK

Dancehall megastar Mavado kicked off his UK/European Tour in fine style last night at Club Isis in Nottingham, causing pandemonium with the many females in attendance, who spent most of his performance trying to drag him off stage.

The packed club was the first of 4 shows on the “Brighter Days” UK tour, with Bristol, Bradford and London finishing off the UK leg on Sunday night. Alliance stablemate Serani and Bugle are also on the UK tour. The Anger Management Band is the backing band for the London show, with Alliance selector Boom Boom also in the travel party.

Monday sees Mavado jetting off to Paris for his first-ever live shows in Europe, which will see the Gully god blaze a trail through France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium.  “It’s my third time in the UK and every time it gets bigger and better,” says Mavado. “I will be performing in many new cities and countries on this tour which is exciting and I am looking forward to going to Europe to spread my music and represent Jamaica.”

As soon as Mavado finishes up in Europe he will fly straight into Miami for the Best of the Best Memorial Day Weekend extravaganza, that promises to be bigger and better than ever, rounding out a gruelling month in LA for the UCLA Jazz Festival on Monday May 25th.

Being able to perform in UK cities that had previously stopped Mavado performing there and with successful shows in St Maarten and Antigua recently, his travelling woes seem far behind now, as Mavado moves on to a busy Summer that will see him in action in Atlanta, Greensboro, the St Kitts Music Festival, HOT 97’s Summer Jam, the Brooklyn Music festival and his first ever tour to Japan amongst other places.

With some big name collaborations in the making, the Gully God’s international popularity continues to expand.

April 24th, 2009

Mavado Headlines “Best of the Best”

The show that promises to be the ‘best of the best’ is indeed that. The 2009 line-up for its third undertaking on Sunday, May 24th at Bicentennial Park in Miami sees nothing but stars! Billed as the “Best Caribbean Show in North America,” Best of the Best has grown into an international music festival, which music lovers journey from around the world to savor each year. Presented by Miami’s premier promotions company, JBJ Entertainment, this year’s roster showcases artists that are at the top of their game, in their respective genres, in Caribbean and urban music.

Dancehall star Mavado is enjoying amazing crossover success with his current album sitting pretty at #76 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-hop albums; it’s the only Caribbean album on a Billboard mainstream chart. “Last year I didn’t get to make it to the show,” says Mavado. “So this year, Best of the Best is going to get the very best of Mavado.”

Also enjoying tremendous mainstream airplay is Serani, whose single “No Games” comes in at #67 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-hop chart this week. “With all the positive things happening in my career recently, Best of the Best is dropping at the right time,” reveals Serani. “I’m 100% ready to celebrate with all my fans cause it’s going to be one big party!”

Elephant Man joins the momentum as his dance anthem “Nuh Linga” debuts this week on Billboard’s Hot 100 R&B/Hip-hop chart at #100. Fans can also expect to enjoy massive catalogs of hits from Wayne Wonder (”No Letting Go,” # 11 Billboard Hot 100; 2003), Bounty Killer (”Hey Baby” with No Doubt; 2001 & “Hip Hopera” with The Fugees; 1997), Beenie Man (”Hmm Hmm,” #42 Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop Singles Sales; 2006), Capleton (Heathen Rage, #42 Billboard Hot Rap Singles; 1996), Cocoa Tea (”Barack Obama,” #9 Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop Singles Sales; 2009), and Tony Matterhorn (”Dutty Wine,” #24 Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-hop Singles Sales; 2007).

The show will also profile soca star Destra, who drops her new album internationally this week. Reggae artist Ras Penco comes with the #3 reggae song in Jamaica, while Ce’Cile sits at the top of the reggae album chart (Jamaica Weekly Countdown). The Caribbean roster rounds up with Spice (who is enjoying massive airplay with her collaboration with Vybz Kartel, “Romping Shop”), Flippa Mafia, Christopher Martin and The Stones.

Hip-hop lovers will be satisfied with heavyweights like Rick Ross (who just dropped his new album this week, Deeper Than Rap), Jeezy, remix king T-Pain and Miami’s own DJ Khaled. “It’s going to be a night to remember,” states Mavado, of the star-studded bill. “The show’s name tells you who is performing, so the fans can come out and expect to see the best.”

Air Jamaica has just been added as an airline sponsor for the show, which takes place at Bicentennial Park, located at 1075 Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami. Park gates open at 1:00 pm and show time is set for 1:30pm sharp. The 10-hour event does not end there. Everyone is invited to the official Best of the Best After Party, at Bongos Nightclub (located behind the American Airlines Arena), immediately following the show.

Mavado Rips the B.E.T Runway

February 24th, 2009

Mavado Rips the B.E.T Runway

Dancehall bad boy David ‘Mavado’ Brooks is definitely in full throttle mode as the release of his second album ‘Mr. Brook - A Better Tomorrow’ approaches.

Last Saturday (Feb.21st) while in the Big Apple the Gangsta was one of the specially invited performers at the highly publicised ‘BET Rip The Runway 2009′ fashion event held at the Hammerstein Ballroom, New York and indeed the singjay did not disappoint.

Hosted by rapper Nelly and actress Lauren London, and executive produced this year by Diddy, the excitement of this year’s Rip The Runway was amazing. Full of exclusive performances, celebrity models, designer fashions, and bangin’ music.

This year’s show featured the newest designs from fashion lines such as Sean John, Apple Bottom, Amaya Swimwear, Respect M.E., Zac Posen, and more. Even Snoop Dogg got his fashion on, when he debuted his line as well as that of his wife.

Celebrity models who strutted their stuff included Toccara, Charli Baltimore, 106 & Park’s Terrence J. and Rocsi, America’s Next Top Model winner Jaslene Gonzalez, The Wire’s Lil Snoop, host Lauren London and more. Once again, the event featured plus-sized models, but Toccara almost didn’t fit as the BET host showed up with a much slimmer figure.

Other performers includes Nelly, Flo-Rida, Missy Elliot, T-Pain, N.E.R.D., Webbie, Trey Songz, Ron Browz, Busta Rhymes, The Dream, Fabolous, Keri Hilson, T.I. and last but by no means least Snoop Dogg.

SELECTORS BEATEN, FOOTA HYPE’S HAND IS BROKEN

(Jamaica, W.I) A Westmoreland dance ended in agony for two selectors who were beaten by men aligned to the notorious Nineties gang. One of the selectors who was injured was Alliance selector ‘Foota Hype’ who early reports say was beaten to the point where one of his hands was broken in two places.  Another selector, Fluggo from Travellers, was also beaten brutally by a group of over 20 men to the point where he had to be admitted to the hospital.

“De man dem say Mavado was supposed to go to the dance and him never go, dem claim say a Foota cause it, but Fluggo from Travellers get it wicked, the argument is that him violate wid the flyers inna some way and dem beat him too, all chop wid lass him get,” one source told reggaemusicfm.

Three years ago, selector ‘Hottaball’ was beaten by men from the Nineties as well who felt that he had dissed the Alliance, and was aligned to Beenie Man.

When contacted, selector Foota Hype would neither confirm or deny that the incident had happened only to say that he “was stressed out about the whole thing but call me tomorrow”.

All Daggering Songs Banned in JA

February 9th, 2009

All Daggering Songs Banned in Jamaica

The Broadcasting Commission (Jamaica) has banned all radio, television and cable services from airing songs or videos which it deems explicitly sexual and violent.

According to the Commission, these songs are in violation of sections of the Television and Sound Broadcasting Regulations.

It also says there should be no transmission through radio, television or cable services, of any audio recording, song or music video, which employs editing techniques of ‘bleeping’ or ‘beeping’ of its original lyrical content.

The Commission says it has examined a number of songs, popularly referred to as ‘daggering songs’.

It says ‘daggering’ is a colloquial term or phrase used in the dancehall culture as a reference to hard core sex, or the activities of persons engaged in the public simulation of various sexual acts and positions.

The country’s electronic media watch dog group says programme managers, station owners and operators must immediately stop airing any recording of these ‘daggering’ songs.

The Commission has been lobbying the Government for changes to be made to the law governing broadcasting and a report is to be tabled in Parliament soon.
